Advanced Fingerboard Latch Monitoring

Protect crew and assets from dropped pipe and ghost pipe incidents

The fingerboard comprises steel latches or ‘fingers’ that pneumatically operate to retain stands of drill pipe in the setback area.

Reliability is affected by multiple environmental factors which may cause latches to malfunction — leading to a mismatch between latch command and actual latch status.

Traditionally, drillers rely on visual inspection to monitor latch status. Human error can lead to undetected latch failure risking dropped objects and other serious pipe-handling incidents.

With many thousands of sensors
installed, Latch Hawk is proven to boost safety and efficiency during pipe handling operations,  reducing incidents & improving fingerboard reliability by up to 80%.

Real-time latch monitoring and predictive fingerboard maintenance

Latch Hawk® protects crew and assets from pipe handling incidents. In real-time, it delivers direct confirmation of individual fingerboard latch status directly to the drillers cabin – eliminating the need for dedicated spotters and preventing dropped objects (DROPS), serious pipe handling incidents and costly downtime.

Latch Hawk is a network of long-life, retrofit wireless sensors operating on Salunda’s zone certified Hawk network. This low latency, high capacity network is proven to accurately and reliably deliver the deterministic status of every latch directly to the drillers cabin, instantly alerting when unsafe latch conditions are detected. Additionally, Hawk Analytics — a comprehensive suite of analytical dashboards — provides asset owners with the data driven insights required to implement predictive maintenance and deliver significant improvements in fingerboard performance and reliability.

Prevent DROPS incidents with Latch Hawk fingerboard monitoring

Detecting failed and suspect latches visually with dedicated spotters and cameras is challenging, failure to spot any latch failure — and resulting mismatch between the commanded latch status and the actual latch status — poses the risk of a dropped object or other serious pipe-handling incident.

Latch Hawk delivers accurate and reliable fingerboard monitoring in real-time, minimising the potential for DROPS, severe injuries and costly downtime during pipe handling operations.

Latch Hawk provides a direct measurement of the status of every fingerboard latch in real-time, without the need for a spotter or camera.

Each sensor is designed to fit the nominated latch type, a unique locking screw mechanism provides secondary retention and can be rerofitted to existing latches without any downtime.

Latch Hawk delivers oustanding in-service reliability, with minimal maintenance burden.

Hawk Analytics white logo

Hawk Analytics enables the implementation of targeted, proactive, and predictive maintenance schedules which reduce costly downtime, protect assets and eliminate serious incidents due to fingerboard and latch failures.

Use Hawk Analytics to compare fingerboard performance across your fleet, leverage interactive maintenance dashboards to identify failed and suspect latches, drill down into individual latch history and spot issues before they escalate into unnescessary down time.

Latch Hawk seamlessly integrates with major drilling control systems, such as Cyberbase, Amphion, and Drillview. With OEM integration, Latch Hawk alerts the driller from within the control system HMI and the pipe racker is interlocked when unsafe fingerboard latch conditions are detected.

Features and capability

Proven to protect crew and assets from pipe-handling incidents, Salunda Latch Hawk detects faulty latches, prevents DROPS, reduces non-productive time, and enables implementation of predictive fingerboard maintenance schedules.

Monitoring and Alerting

Latch Hawk sensors confirm the real-time status of every latch, streaming data to a single-board computer and delivering complete fingerboard latch status directly to the driller’s cabin.

Alerts are triggerred when unsafe fingerboard latch conditions are detected.

Rapid Installation

Latch Hawk is designed for easy and rapid installation around operations.

Each sensor is designed to fit the nominated latch type, a unique locking screw mechanism provides secondary retention and can be retrofitted to existing latches in seconds without any downtime.

Predictive Maintenance

Hawk Analytics enables the implementation of targeted, proactive, and predictive maintenance schedules which reduce costly downtime, protect assets and eliminate serious incidents.

Proven across multiple rigs to help significantly improve fingerboard reliability and reduce faulty latches within short operating periods.
